Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)¶
Here you will find answers to the most common questions regarding Aikido practice.
What should I bring to my first class?
For your first class, all you need is:
- Comfortable sweatpants or athletic pants
- A short-sleeved or long-sleeved t-shirt
- Slip-on shoes (flip-flops/sandals) for walking between the changing room and the tatami
- A water bottle
Do I need a gi (keikogi) for my first class?
No, for your first few classes you can practice in regular athletic clothes. You can purchase a gi later after consulting with the instructor.
Are classes suitable for children?
Yes, most clubs have dedicated children’s groups categorized by age. Classes are tailored to the age and abilities of the kids, focusing primarily on coordination, natural movement, and basic etiquette.
Is there a risk of injury during practice?
No, safety and health are top priorities in training. Personal capabilities and individual limitations are always respected. The goal is not to force a technique at all costs, but to create an environment that allows everyone to practice well into old age. While injuries can happen (which is why most clubs ask you to sign a liability waiver), they are the exception rather than the rule.
Are the techniques painful?
Techniques would be painful if applied with brute force, but that is not done in training — otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to practice every day. For your first few classes, try to pair up with more advanced practitioners who can accurately gauge your ability and execute techniques very gently.
